Kel Tec PF-9 FTEs fixed
11/03/12 05:47 PM

Fixed permanently, I don't know. But the gun was jamming every round after about 160 flawless rounds. Suddenly it couldn't shoot. I tried filing a small amount of material off the base of the extractor (not the "grabber"), thinning it a touch and thus moving the "grabber" closer to the cartridge . That reduced the number of FTEs, but didn't eliminate them. So I tried the method you guys suggested--doubling the extractor springs. That did the trick! Fires every time. I also discovered something interesting--the extractors, extractor springs and screws are identical on the PF-9 and the P3AT. In fact, I used an extra extractor spring from my P3AT on the PF-9. But you'll pay a dollar more to order the PF-9 parts from Kel Tec. Anyway, thanks for the advice. Good to have guns that shoot. Bad to have guns that don't.

absolutely. i had read that about slipping the extractor base down. i was ready to do that next if this didnt solve the problem.

incidentally, by complaining to Kel-Tec about the problem, they send me the second extractor kit for free...they even covered the shipping, so really there should be no extra cost.

itd be even better if they just solved the problem before the guns left the factory..

glad yours is working. i dont like my kel-tec, but it doesnt suck to have a gun that conceals as easy as it does from time to time.

I don't think Kel Tec's concealable pistols are made to be liked, because they're not much fun to shoot. But they're light and easily concealed, so they function in their role once you get them to shoot reliably. On the other hand, why should the owner have to fix what is essentially a brand new gun? I wouldn't buy a new car if I had to take it home and do a valve job on it to get it to run the way it should. I've heard that Kel Tec's customer service is second-to-none, but that hasn't been my experience. They haven't answered any of my e-mails, or the letter I sent. I made a phone call finally and after waiting about 10 minutes I told a very friendly young man what the problem was and we agreed on what I needed in order to fix it. I didn't get it. If I'd mailed the gun in they may or may not have fixed it right. From what I've read it can go either way. PLUS you have to pay shipping to get it there (most companies with good customer service send you a box and a prepaid shipping label) AND it can take up to--or more than--8 weeks to get your gun back! That's not outstanding service. But... they do have low prices... and I'm basically thrifty (my wife calls it "cheap")... so I have two Kel Tecs... and they both work now.
