The FBI UCR Statistics, My Personal Take

The data listed below is from the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for 2011; the 2012 data has not been made available in its final form yet. This particular analysis of the data is not new news, and has been pretty widely discussed on more than a few sites online. I decided to post it here on easybakegunclub to give my take on what the data means to me. I don't think my conclusions are news to any gun owners, but it is something that has been lost in the argument (I think argument is more appropriate word than debate) over gun control laws.

A lot of comparisons have been made between the homicide rates for rifles and those for blunt objects, for knives, and for hands. Gun control advocates will argue that this comparison is invalid because it compares only the number of murders committed using rifles and does not include handguns, shotguns, or other (meaning the report submitted to the FBI did not contain the firearm type). I maintain that this is a valid comparison.  Guns, hammers, clubs, screwdrivers, knives etc... are ALL merely tools.  If you lay any of them on a table, they will not kill anyone.  It is only when a deranged person picks one up, that it becomes a hazard. Additionally, the proposed gun control bans are focused on rifles, or "assault rifles" (read "scary-looking rifles").

And it seems to me, if more people had a gun in these situations, fewer people would try to hit them with a hammer.

This leads me to two conclusions: gun control advocates are taking a bend-them-till-they-break approach hoping that a small infringement on the 2nd will be tolerated now, another small one later, another later, and so on until there is a complete gun ban, or they aren't really interested in preventing deaths, they just want to exploit these deaths, such as mass shootings, to manipulate people into getting rid of what they have a phobia of.

Of the 62 mass shootings where 5 or more people were either shot or killed from the early 1980's till the present; 41 times pistols were used, 12 times shotguns or some type of hunting-styled rifle was used, and 9 times semi-automatic rifles were used (14 percent).

Of the 62 incidents, 42 of the shooters had some kind of mental illness or mental illness history of some kind, 16 of the shooters had unknown or unclear history of mental illness, and only 4 shooters had no history of mental illness.

Criminals and mass murders are not law abiding citizens. Regardless of what the law states, what the consequences may be, it will not prevent a would be thief, a predator, or a murderer from breaking these laws. A law-abiding citizen obeys the law; a criminal does not. People who have mass murder in their heart and mind will do so. No matter the tool.

Consider the following:

-April 16, 2007, Blacksburg, Virginia (Virginia Tech). Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and wounded 23 others before committing suicide. The massacre is the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history.

-April 19, 1995, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Timothy Mcveigh detonated a bomb in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building resulting in 168 dead, 6 being children, and 680 wounded.  No rifle, no "assault rifle", no pistol, no gun of any kind . Instead fertilizer, racing fuel, and a pickup.

-March 25, 2008, Sitka, Alaska. An 18 year killed 4 people with a 5-inch knife.

-August 6, 2004, Deltona, Fla. Four men bludgeoned 6 people using baseball bats. All of the attackers were old enough to buy firearms.

-September 11, 2001, New York City, NY. Nineteen terrorists murdered nearly 3,000 people by intentionally flying planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Arlington, Va.

The real point of all these numbers is that it is not the tool that does the killing, it is the person.  And a person bent on destruction will use any tool at their discretion.

YES THANK YOU... THE STATS I AM GETTING ON AVERAGE INDICATE:
OF THE 8,552 HOMICIDES...... THIS INCLUDED THE CONVERSION BY THE SAME % OF THE FIREARMS - TYPE UNKNOWN INTO THE BASE FIGURE.
.90119 BY HAND GUN = 7,707
.047 BY RIFLE = 402
.0518 BY SHOTGUN = 443

WHAT ABOUT SUICIDES ?? WERE THESE INCLUDED IN THESE FIGURES ?

HOMICIDES LATER REDUCED TO ACCIDENTAL ??

HOMICIDES OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS SERVING IN THE LINE OF DUTY

CRIMINALS SHOT BY LEGAL CARRY HOME OWNERS IN DEFENSE OF PROPERTY / LIFE... JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE?

ALSO WOULD BE INTERESTED TO KNOW THE FACTS AS REGARDS HOMICIDES / STATE / POPULATION... PER CAPITA

WE SHOULD RELATE BY STATE WHERE SUCH EXISTING LAWS WERE INTENDED TO REDUCE VIOLENT CRIME BY DISARMING LEGAL CITIZENS AND THE FACT - SUCH AS IN CHICAGO, HOMICIDES COMMITTED BY CRIMINALS ARE ON THE RISE.

HOW MANY HOMICIDES AS NOTED WERE COMMITTED BY OFFENDERS THAT USED STOLEN GUNS THAT THE LEGAL "BACKGROUND" CHECKS WOULD NOT HAVE PREVENTED /

I HAVE LOST FAITH IN THE N.R.A.... THEY WILL BOW DOWN TO THIS ADMINISTRATION ON THESE AND OTHER ISSUES AND WE THE PEOPLE CANNOT... WE CANT GIVE AN INCH BECAUSE EACH LAW, EACH EXECUTIVE ORDER, PLACES OUR COUNTRY IN FURTHER JEOPARDY OF BECOMING THE NEXT ARGENTINA. UNDER A DICTATOR AND OR ADMINISTRATION SEEKING TO CREATE A WORLD ORDER WITH FEWER CIVIL LIBERTIES AND RIGHTS AS PROVIDED BY THE CONSTITUTION.

WE NEED SUBSTANTIATED FACTS AND NOT MEDIA "SPIN" IF WE ARE TO DEFEND THIS FREEDOM AND THE OTHER FREEDOMS OUR CONSTITUTION AND BILL OF RIGHTS PROVIDES.
