It's all about shot placement (Texas)

On April 20th in Houston, Texas, a 19-year-old and a friend met up with a group of men to "conduct some business". Really, that's what police are saying. Wouldn't it be easier to just say "deal drugs"?

Anyway, one of the people in the group of men drew a gun and tried to rob the 19-year-old.

The 19-year-old drew his gun and ended it with a headshot.

He will be charged with murder, you can't claim self-defense while committing a crime

(a) Except as provided in Subsection (b), a person is justified in using force against another when and to the degree the actor reasonably believes the force is immediately necessary to protect the actor against the other's use or attempted use of unlawful force. The actor's belief that the force was immediately necessary as described by this subsection is presumed to be reasonable if the actor:

(3) was not otherwise engaged in criminal activity, other than a Class C misdemeanor that is a violation of a law or ordinance regulating traffic at the time the force was used

Aaah, but realize they aren't saying it was a drug deal. They probably can't prove that part so he will likely escape prosecution

So true but unless he has a CCW permit (21 or in the military in TX) he will be charged with position of an illegal weapon along with other charges
