After Wayne LaPierre's much discussed speech yesterday the gun control crowd and the media came out in force to call the plan to address mental health and put police in schools out of touch and insensitive to the current atmosphere.
There's a slight problem with that. It's not Wayne LaPierre's plan or even the NRA's plan. It's President Clinton's plan. Way back in 2000, months after Columbine, President Clinton announced $120 million in new federal grants Saturday to place more police officers in schools and help even the youngest kids cope with their problems.
So a two phase program focused on true mental health care and putting more police in schools? Where did I hear that recently? Oh right! In Wayne LaPierre's speech that everyone is so quick to ridicule.
What ever came of President Clinton's "COPS in School" program and the associated mental healthcare programs?
Good question, but not one the media will likely discuss in it's current lather to bash the same plan they praised a decade ago.
