Why Gun Control Fails; 8 NYPD Officers Arrested for Smuggling (New York)

Resource: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/26/nyregion/new-york-officers-accused-of-smuggling-guns.html?_r=2&
While the gun control craze is in full swing it's always fun to see how upset gun control advocated get when someone explains that the problem is criminals and not legally owned guns. Today we get a great example of why gun control laws fail - because of people.

Specifically, in today's case, because of 8 NYPD officers and four other men who were arrested by the FBI and accused of transporting firearms (including M-16 assault rifles and handguns) in violation of federal and state gun laws. Yes, yes, in Mayor Michael Bloomberg's own backyard the gun control laws failed because people acted in violation of the law. There's a word for those people... criminals.

Gun control laws fail because criminals are willing to circumvent the law.

The case started back in 2009 when an FBI confidential informant tried to have a ticket fixed in exchange for payment. In the process he met Officer William Masso and the two quickly became friends. Masso eventually approached the information about setting up an operation to smuggle in cigarettes and other contraband items to New York City.

In what would be over a year long investigation by FBI and the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau - including undercover agents and wiretaps - the smuggling ring grew to include counterfeit goods (where do you think the fake Louis Vuitton bags come from?), slot machines, clothing, handbags, and eventually the firearms.

As part of the sting operation, eight of the men from the smuggling ring were paid between $2,000 and $5,000 to help transport firearms - including three M-16 assault rifles - into the city from New Jersey (another bastion of gun control policy). The smugglers were told that the serial numbers had been removed from the guns making them untraceable. Unbeknownst to the officers, the weapons were already made inoperable as part of the sting.

Police Commissioner Kelly's statement:
"The sad reality is that some people are going to violate their oath of office. I would submit to you that it is a very small minority. But if you had 1 percent of 50,000 people you would have 500 people."

My question? If the Commissioner understand that even some of our sworn officers will break the law to smuggle guns into the City - why does he think ordinary criminals will be restricted by more gun control laws?
