At 1:47 Sunday morning, officers in East Ridge, Tennessee received a call of a burglary in progress. While en route, the officers received an updated call of shots fired on the scene.

Chas Scruggs showed up at the home and started pounding on the door. The resident yelled through the door, "What do you want?" and told the person that the police were on their way.

Scruggs then broke out a window and tried to open the door. The resident fired a single shot and missed. By that time the residents father had arrived and confronted Scruggs. As Scruggs charged, the father fired a shot into the ground.

Scruggs fled to the back of the house where he tried to break in yet again. At this point police arrived and saved Scruggs life.
