At approximately 9:56 a.m., Birmingham Police received a call indicating that a man had been shot. When they arrived on the scene, officers found 43-year-old Demetrius Edward Thompson dead in the yard.
It seems Thompson got into a dispute with a man visiting an adjacent property - which Thompson also owned. The dispute got heated and Thompson fired at the visitor. The visitor obviously did not appreciate being shot at so he grabbed his gun and returned fire, killing Thompson.
Police believe Thompson said something to the shooter before he shot at him, but the sergeant said he doesn't know what was said. "We don't know why he was trying to shoot at this person,'' he said. "Nobody has established a motive. That's something nobody has been able to give us."
