George Zimmerman has filed a motion seeking the refund of his legal defense fees estimated to be between $200,000 and $300,000. Florida law states that a defendant who is acquitted is not liable for costs associated with their case.
In order to get reimbursed, the motion must be approved by a judge and then get past the roadblocks of the Florida Judicial Administrative Commission.
Lead attorney Mark O'Mara said he hasn't charged Zimmerman anything but has kept billing records. As for the Judicial Administrative Commission? "That's where the fight is," according to O'Mara.
I'm a big supporter of laws like this. If the State can use unlimited resources to come after you, you should get your defense paid for once you're acquitted. I'd actually like to see a dollar for dollar credit... if the State spends $400,000 you get that much to hire attorney's and experts as well. That's how you create a level playing field.
