Anti-Gun Number Bullshit

I really don't mind the gun control discussion. I am of the belief that what people believe should be influenced by data and newer different data should be capable of changing minds. But OMG at how ridiculously skewed old data can be made to try and manipulate people. This Article from Christan Science Monitor shows some stats as presented by the Brady Campaign that are seriously meaningless or downright misleading.

Here are some of the gems:

One in three people in the US knows someone who has been shot

- What does this even mean? This is a pointless number. If someone gets shot and a lot of people know that person then this number goes up. if the same person gets shot and only knows a few people, this number doesnt go up. still only one guy got shot. Does it count that I know who John Lennon is and he was shot? This is a totally pointless value used for no other purpose than to create a dramatic effect. Next they will want to factor in the price of tomatoes.

On average, 32 Americans are murdered with guns every day and 140 are treated for a gun assault in an emergency room.

According to the website, this number is based on death certificates and hospital reports. It doesn't say what the circumstances were and we as Americans understand that circumstances are huge. Its why we have a judicial system in the first place. I might be wrong, but if it is based on all death certificates of people killed by guns, then it might very well include dangerous criminals killed by the police or other good guys with guns. Why would we want to use the death of dangerous criminals as a statistic to show why law abiding citizens shouldnt have guns?

Every day on average, 51 people kill themselves with a firearm, and 45 people are shot or killed in an accident with a gun.

Does this include people who want to kill themselves? If someone wants to die and decides to kill themselves, how is that a reason to take my gun? As for gun related accidents. that might include people who accidentally hurt themselves with guns at home. Is that a reason to make guns illegal? Americans hurt themselves at home in many different ways. Lawn mowers come to mind, but we still cut our lawns. Oven accidents occur, but we still cook our food. Again. More meaningless numbers that do not speak to a valid point against law abiding citizens owning guns.

Although guns can and have been used successfully in self-defense in the home, a gun in the home is 22 times more likely to be used to kill or injure in a domestic homicide, suicide, or unintentional shooting than to be used in self-defense.

This is so disrespectful. I hate when people write like this. It basically says - let me take away your pro argument before I even make my con argument. If i use my gun to successfully protect myself 100% of the time, why take my gun because of someone else's tragedy. Its about choice. If i have my gun, i have the choice to defend myself. If someone else's tragedy means i lose the CHOICE to protect myself when someone comes in my house to hurt me, then gun control can only cause the first tragedy to lead to more deaths. Also, combining these concepts is subterfuge. 22 percent more likely to be one of 3 things of which have different values in the overall argument. If 21 percent of that is suicides, then I really don't see how it applies. If 21 percent is accidental injuries then I still don't see how it applies. If most of it is intentional domestic homicides, well that's at least worth noting in the argument, but why don't they present these values alone? Because they know the values don't hold weight separately maybe?

Obama himself said:
“That means we've got to get back up and go back at it because as long as there are those who fight to make it as easy as possible for dangerous people to get their hands on a gun, then we've got to work as hard as possible for the sake of our children,”

What he doesn't get is that no one is fighting to make it easy for dangerous people to get guns. What we fight for is to make it hard for the government to say good guys CAN'T get guns. Even if you don't like guns, if you don't support the 2nd amendment in its entirety, you will see it gone altogether and that will be VERY bad for this country. The same way you better fight for everybody's right to express unpopular opinions and media (even porn) because we know that if we start stripping the first amendment, thats the end of everything also.

If you want to discuss gun control, discuss it, but don't listen to extravagantly worded numbers that mean nothing to the argument.

In the end there is only one argument, can we conceivably get rid of all guns with unenforceable laws or will this just disarm the righteous while enabling the wicked. Thats it. If you believe in gun control its because you think the law can stop bad guys with guns from being bad guys with guns by taking guns from the good guys. I absolutely disagree that its possible but at least its a valid argument for gun control. Anything else is just Number Bullshit.
