Like a scene from the days of the wild west, an armed bandit entered the Phillips 66 station in Houston, Texas intent on robbing the store. What he found instead were armed store clerks willing to fight back.
The gunfight went on for almost an hour before authorities arrived.
Let me say that again... the gunfight went on for almost an hour before authorities arrived.
Around 6:20 Saturday morning a man entered the gas station, strode to the counter, pulled a gun and pointed it at the head of one of the clerks. That's when this would be robber found out the store is very firearms friendly and both clerks were armed. That's when the story got strange.
The suspect then fled toward the back corner of the store and began flinging gallons of anti-freeze, and then the motor oil. According to store owner Anand Patel, "He's basically throwing it like a hand grenade, these gallons."
Ultimately, the robber stood a little too high for his concealment. As he stood to take aim at one of the clerks, the other clerk fired. On surveillance video, Anand says, you can see him go down, bleeding. Was that the end of it? Not even close.
Somehow, and police are still investigating how, the robber started a fire inside the store. When they initially arrived on the scene police could not enter because of poor visibility from the smoke. When police did get in, they arrested the man and transported him to Ben Taub Hospital for treatment.
Store clerk Ashish Shah says this isn't the first time the store's been targeted by criminals, "We've been hit before. This is like, in four or five months, probably six or seven times. And, it's got to stop somewhere."
One thing store owner Anand Patel wanted to make sure everyone knows... they are still going to be armed.
