Family hears intruder, warns intruder, opens fire (Florida)

You read the title correctly, the family shot and killed a burglar.

It was just before 7a.m. yesterday morning (March 7th, 2014) when a Winter Haven, Florida family heard what sounded like someone rattling the French doors at the back of the home. One of the family members saw an intruder there and alerted the family. All three people who were home - Luis F. Pena, 54, Bacenbina A. Pena, 53, and their son, Luis A. Pena - armed themselves.

The son went to investigate the disturbance. What he found was 40-year-old Mitchell G. Large still trying to enter the home. The son fired a warning shot - and that warning shot failed to deter Large. Large forced into the home and charged. At that point, according to police, multiple shots were fired from multiple handguns and Large was struck several times.

Winter Haven Police spokeswoman Jamie Brown said Large was struck in the upper torso but she did not know the caliber of the pistols the family used. Polk County Fire Rescue emergency medical responders arrived at the scene and pronounced Large dead in the kitchen of the home.

As in all shootings in Florida, police will complete their investigation and submit it to the State Attorney's Office but no charges are expected to be filed.

Neighbors say they have seen an increase in break-ins in the area lately but still feel safe in their neighborhood. According to Neighbor Denver Kemp, "If this guy had stayed home, he'd be alive right now. If someone threatens my life, I would lower the boom on them but I would hate to shoot anyone."
