Nicholas Hartman walked into a Shelby, North Carolina gas station yesterday (June 9th, 2014) wearing a mask and wielding a can of bear spray.
Apparently, Hartman's plan didn't include an armed store clerk. Clerk Gary Padgett pulled his concealed handgun and sent Hartman skittering out the door.
That's when a Good Samaritan noticed something odd as he drove past the gas station. According to Bandon Sabins:
"A guy had just run out, he stumbled out the door and fell on the ground and got right back up. And following him was a clerk with a gun. The guy was running across a field to a house."
Sabins said that he didn’t know at the time if Hartman had a weapon but drove to cut off Hartman's path. Sabins and Padgett restrained Hartman until sheriff’s deputies arrived.
"The suspect is extremely lucky he could have been wounded or killed," Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman said. "Today was a prime example of a good Samaritan stepping up and helping."
Hartman faces one count of common law robbery and is being held on a $20,000 secure bond.
