An off-duty Detroit police officer was sitting his church pew for a quiet Sunday morning (June 13th). That quiet was just the calm before the storm.
Hearing a commotion in front of the church, the off-duty officer went outside to find people running away from a deranged axe-wielding man. According to witnesses the deranged man was quickly approaching and appeared determined to harm people.
As the off-duty officer approached and tried to de-escalate the situation, the axe-wielding man attacked. The off-duty officer was struck in the leg and fell to the ground. That's when the attacker lifted the axe and swung at the off-duty officer.
The off-duty officer was able to draw his handgun and fire, critically wounding the man.
Police have released that the attacker has a history of mental illness. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
The officer was treated on scene and released.
