911 operator tells elderly woman to disarm, wait for police as intruders break in (Florida)

A Holmes Beach, Florida woman's recovery from hip replacement surgery was put to the test when she heard someone breaking into her home. The woman grabbed her gun and called 911. You won't believe what 911 told her.

NJ Logan was upstairs in her Holmes Beach, Florida home recovering from recent hip replacement surgery when she heard a ruckus downstairs. NJ was home alone while her husband was at a bridge game

She told local reporters, "I kept hearing a commotion, like there were people walking around down there. It's a little frightening. You know that you don't have the security you thought you had."

According to police, the ruckus NJ heard was an would-be robber using a large rock to smash out the glass of the outside door and cutting out the screen door.

Limited by her surgery and realizing the noise wasn't her husband coming home, NJ was scared. She said, "I don't know what was going on in my mind. Honestly, all I wanted was my gun."

NJ quickly grabbed her revolver and called out warnings to anybody in the house or near the house that she was armed.

"I didn't want to shoot. I really didn't want to have to shoot anybody," she said. NJ knew she needed help so she called 911. What the 911 operator said shocked her.

"When I called 911 she kept saying put the gun down. Put the gun down and I said I'll put the gun down when I see the police," NJ said.

When the intruder did enter the home, NJ was waiting with gun in hand. That was all it took to send the intruder fleeing.

"I think it's a wake up call to any would-be burglar," said Holmes Beach Police Chief William Tokajer.

NJ said she is very worried about someone trying to break in again and that she has no plans to disarm herself, despite that sage advice from a 911 operator.

"I believe in guns inside your house, because I don't think anybody has the right to break into your private domain. I'll definitely have the gun up there that is for sure."
