Lizette Rosario was asleep when her son took the trash out to the curb. Seeing an intruder, the boy called out to warn his mother that someone was breaking in. The xD9 had been in Lizette's nightstand since she purchased it five years ago. As she told reporters,
"I never even touched it before last night"
Hearing her son's warning, Lizette grabbed the gun and stormed out of the house after the intruder.
"I woke up frantic. The first thing I thought of was to grab my gun, defend my home, defend my child, and that's exactly what I went out there to do.
"When you come in a fenced yard, a private property that's fenced in -- you jump the fence and you're at the back door -- your intentions are not good"
Once outside, Lizette saw the would be intruder run and hide behind a shed in her back yard. She ordered him to come out with his hands up. As he started to come outside, Lizette's son tackled him from behind and held him to the ground.
Identified by police as Robert Williamson, the intruder was unarmed but police did find a roll of duct tape when they arrested him.
Lizette later told local reporters,
"I will protect my home and my kids under any circumstances"
