Ottawa Shooter Was Banned From Owning Guns

Michael Zehaf-Bibeau used a lever action 30-30 rifle in his shooting spree in Ottawa last Wednesday.  One of the many questions that remains however is: How did he get it?  Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was not legally able to possess a gun in canada.

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson revealed yesterday that Zehef-Bibeau was under a criminal prohibition from possessing firearms.

It is standard practice in Canada for courts to issue a lifetime gun ban to almost anyone convicted of a violent offence.

I certainly take no pleasure in using the latest shooting in Canada as an example of how criminals get guns whether they are allowed to have them or not, but it would be irresponsibile to not recognize this huge elephant in the room. Criminals will get guns. Criminals will get guns. Criminals will get guns.

In a recent discussion over the Toronto shooting from earlier this year I had a Canadian calling me not nice names suggesting that the many shootings in the United States trumped any discussion about the violence in Canada and I had no business using Canada in my argument.  My counter point (and i sincerely hoped i was wrong) was that Canada might just be getting a taste of what is to come. But I wasn't wrong and whether you believe it is an exploitation of a tragedy for political gain or not, data is data, truth is truth, facts are facts and facts are all I am interested in when debating any subject no matter what it happens to be.
